  1. Thank you. I have Schizophrenia and am not in a hospital but living my life. I developed this late on life, in my 40’s. The one thing that takes my mind of off the hallucinations is being a advocate for unsolved murder. You inspire me! Thank you!!

  2. I am a parent with schizophrenia. I still take care of my child when I hear voices like I still go potty in the toilette. The media portrays us as scary parents, that is so insulting. When I lived in Princeton I would watch John Nash with his son, and they looked like the ideal family. I hate the movie A Beautiful Mind because they lied about John Nash almost drowning his son. That movie was really great at ending the stigma, not. We really need more voices demonstrating that people with mental illness can parent.

  3. This is why I am an advocate for mental illness. It almost killed me and I don't want it to hurt others. We need a reform. Plain and simple.

  4. I recently started suffering and have been diagnosed as paranoid schizophrenia. This video is so emotional for me 😭

  5. And for who ever is going through depression or any other mental illness just to let you know you have people who truly care about you and love you no matter what

  6. RESPECT!!!!!!!!!!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 This is EXACTLY what I’ve been telling Parliament in the form of emails and also tweeting and Facebook messaging!!!!! The system over here and in the US regarding mental illness SUCKS/STINKS…….authorities seem to REFUSE POINT BLANK to RECOGNISE that these illnesses DO EXIST😡😡😡😡

  7. Well, I’m 21 and we ARE the generation that can CHANGE the face of mental health care in enormous ways. I plan on helping contribute.

  8. Ely Saks is brave, but as she puts it, it’s our humanity that unites us. I’m starting a Society for Schizophrenia- https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/thesocietyofschizophrenia. It’s to help sufferers of schizophrenia and related mental illnesses like me, raise education about schizophrenia and spread the word that we are good people!

  9. wow despite her schizophrenia and her ordeal she's a professor.
i have been depressed for years. she's my inspiration now to do something in my life. i love this lady
    judy

  10. psychiatric drugs can be seen as "forced chemical lobotomies".I do try psych drugs for my mental illness of agoraphobia.however, put money into many treatments not just chemical ones. I do agree-eliminate stigma…in the press and movies etc.

  11. when i was a child ….one of the few memories i have is being restrained in a hospital because i tried to jump out of the window of a tall building….i remember clealry having no fear at all and thinking i'd just jump and then walk ….and they saw me just in time and restrained me….it was a bad experience even as a child

  12. if anyone tried to restrain me for my schizophrenia, they'd get thrown on the floor and choked out with my judo. then i'd get shot.

  13. I just read her book. It's strange to hear and see her now. She seems very robotic. I wonder if it's nerves or if this is what she sounds and looks like when she teaches classes as well.

  14. Her book "The center cannot hold: My journey through madness" was one of the best autobiographies!!! Hats off to her bravery!

  15. Has anyone else noticed that at 10:07 she seemed to have an outburst? I sounded like what she said had nothing to do with what she was talking about

  16. A little photon said that it can also go through two slits at the same time. Then a psychiatrist said to the photon, "It is all in your head.", and that, "You are a particle and thus you can only go through one slit at a time.". The little photon said, "You are wrong. I am also a wave. Not only can I do that, I can even see the future and can even change the past.". Naturally the psychiatrist diagnosed these claims as the result of schizophrenia. In turn, the psychiatrist never gave the photon an opportunity to prove his case. No matter how loud the little photon said he was both wave and particle, no one ever listened.

  17. Except for schizophrenia there is nothing called mental illness. Psychiatry has been using schizophrenia to legitimize its so called treatments to other mental conditions. As I said there is no mental illness except schizophrenia period.

  18. 17 mental Hospitals one i got out off i cant remember what day it was schizoaffective bipolar disorder alcoholic drug addictions of many things but more i scored 200 on iq test i have open eye hallucinations third eye alive and well thousands of closed eye hallucintions yes i know the Chakras

  19. you made me cry ive died a thousand deaths yes I ended up in AA they love me when no one else could but my beloved Mother sacrifice of my family is a gift from none other then GOD

  20. the modern treatments of mental illlnesses have all failed for various reasons. The Environment has always been the main factor in mental illnesses for thousands of years but most medical professionals ignore it. The following proposals for healing clinics address these issues, see www.healingcentres.org

  21. Every human has the capacity to develop illness… mental is what we call these behavioral maladaptive "thinking" processes.
HOWEVER, there are DANGEROUS or extremely disruptive individuals who sometimes Cannot control their actions or behavior
😲INDIVIDUALS USUALLY CANNOT BE PERMITTED TO DISRUPT THE ONGOING ORDERLY DAY-TO-DAY OPERATIONS OF HUMAN LIFE😲😖😵
SOOO … how to deal with them?

  22. Hi car crash, wars wictims, terror wictims domestic, rape phadofils wictims
Hi it can happen to anyone, same with drugs, alkohol, jail, justices murders
Chemicals poised, brain injury, heavy illness

So denmark don't step on, I'll people who have serve, or the day was dark

  23. Psychiatry is the industry of death 💀.
Quite a few are in hospitals because they have insurance.
Illegal immigrants are suspiciously absent in the mental health machine. Why?
Look at the information in my thumbnail. It’s true.

  24. About 10 seconds in I thought, "she's sharp as a tack." At the end I thought, "I could cry. She so brave!" Very impressive Elyn. Such a great job. Great TED talk!

  25. As I cry thinking about your ordeal…..I'm sorry you have had to deal with these things . But damn…are we supposed to be beaten up for this ordeal?? At what point ?? …. I'm just tired of being hurt for what people in a similar situation have been doing. we have been assaulted, we have been hurt. And we are tired of it . So until that is rectified…it is hard for me to approach this situation with any degree of sympathy…….. especially when we haven't been given it in returning

  26. Causally/holistically seen we're more or less all responsible for mass murders. But also for the most beautiful moments of everyone's life in every time and quasi everywhere.

  27. The only thing I disagree with is the comment about the media showing characters with mental health, I believe that the media shows mental health in a predominantly negative way, and I believe this contributes to the misconceptions about mental health

  28. Here is a support group for those suffering from Paranoid Schizophrenia

    https://www.facebook.com/groups/660359241051703/?ref=share

  29. I pause the video at 8:00 when the talk turns increasingly to her restraining experience and involunatary hospitalization. The talk becomes more about the treatment of m.i. than m.i. itself and I see the connection with her legal profession.

  30. Actually antipsychotics have so many serious side effects, such as parkinson. We really should put all the efforts in studying this illness and many others to give these people a better life without having to fear another illness while fighting a psychosys.

  31. Also , in the past 7 years, this video has been seen by almost 800,000 viewers, got at least 10,000 likes but only a little less than 800 comments .. people still prefer to not be associated in any way with mental disorders.

  32. I watched this two years ago in my Intro to Psych class, and it has stuck with me ever since. I am proud of this woman and her journey, and was so happy to see her supportive husband in the crowd!

  33. Mentally ill people need all the support they can get. Society expects us to be i dependent and economically sccessful. This isnt always possible with the mentally ill or socalled normals. Get th he best support system you can and live your life as a proud lerson with a handicap.

  34. im of the belief the word "stigma" is astute people branded for reasoning more diligently and critically in regard to the myopia and taboo of the act in choice behaviors

  36. With both my sons suffering from this illness,I had no hope that they would live a normal life. U just gave me hope. Thank u..

  38. schizophrenia literally means split pesonality and is what Jesus dealt with when he cast demons out of people.
Drugs only seem to work with schizophrenics because they dull the brain so much that the demon's instructions cannot get through to control the person – the same way that alcohol makes the brain shut down.
Take a schizo off drugs and soon the demon can get full control again – this is the reason so many 'cured' schizo suddenly become murdering monsters!

  39. In the Bethesda video games Fallout New Vegas and Oblivion schizophrenics are either portrayed as violent villians or comic relief – specifically the characters "No Bark" (because not any of his dogs are barking) and "Glarthir" (who attacks the player character with an axe if the player chooses to tell him his delusions aren't real). In truth, schizophrenics are no more violent than the general population.

  40. Watch a 30 mins video in 3 mins. The BEST extension in google chrome store. www.threelly.com
Plus, the state of the art Artificial Intelligence algorithms automatically analyzes videos to locate and pull the precise location of key points of interest like – topics, scenes, people, sentiments, brands, expressions, labels and much more. Allowing you to rapidly gain intelligent insights from any video.

  41. Her "gibberish" sound like poems being used to make sense of the metaphors and day nightmares she experienced. Almost rhythmic, this sounds like she is using "art therapy" without a therapist in the room. The loose associations are quiet interesting.

  42. I’ve been friends with schitzos, have a few in my family

They are amazing people, very creative and hilarious to be around
The ones in my family have all worn out now

Fuji was my favourite, his 16 cathedrals gang lol

I saw them more as in touch with other realities than our own, a sort of oracle
Think about all these nightmarish video games and movies and watch just how much theirs will come alive.
Powerful minds with a high sensitivity

  43. Very brave of you. You are amazing. You are the courage for people who are recovering from mental illness and the inspiration for doctors and scientists to treat mental illness patients.
    Best wish for you.

  44. أريد أن اقابل الين لاخبرها أن السكيزوفرينيا خدعة
والمصاب ضحية لا غير وذنبه ذكاؤه الخارق الذي يكشف أمورا لا يستطيع كشفها الآخرين

  45. I appreciate her opening statement: "I am a woman with chronic schizophrenia." Not, "I am a schizophrenic." Reminds me to stop calling myself a "diabetic."

  46. Elyn Saks does not know what it is like for the average mentally ill person. She had enough money to be in therapy for years, to pay for medication, doctors. The average mentally ill person does not get anywhere near the amount or type of help she did. That is because treatment costs money and if insurance pays anything it is very little. As a mentally ill person myself, for 40 years, I can say she isn't helping the mentally ill at all.
