Central Ohio program helps those with postpartum depression

MATT: MOTHER’S DAY IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER! MONICA AND AS WE CELEBRATE THE SPECIAL WOMEN IN OUR LIVES, IT’S ALSO IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THE MANY MOMS WHO ARE STRUGGLING WITH MENTAL ILLNESS. MATT: JENNIFER JOINS US NOW WITH A CLOSER LOOK. JENNIFER MAY IS MATERNAL MENTAL HEALTH MONTH. BECOMING A MOM CAN PRODUCE A LOT OF EMOTIONS. BUT SOME NEW MOMS CAN EXPERIENCE MORE SEVERE, LONG-LASTING MOOD DISORDERS — AND MANY OF THEM AREN’T GETTING THE HELP THEY NEED. BUT ONE LOCAL GROUP IS WORKING TO CHANGE THAT. TONYA FULWIDER, CO-FOUNDER, POEM: “WE KNOW ABOUT 1 IN 5 MOMS WILL EXPERIENCE A DIAGNOSABLE MENTAL HEALTH ISSUE…” ONE OF THE MOST COMMON — IS POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION. TONYA FULWIDER, CO-FOUNDER, POEM: “WE HEAR THE TERM “POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION,” BUT WHAT WE REALLY KNOW IS THAT THAT DEPRESSION IN THE SENSE THAT PEOPLE THINK OF DEPRESSION, AS FEELING DOWN, NOT FEELING MOTIVATED, SLEEPING ALL THE TIME… IT REALLY DOESN’T LOOK LIKE THAT IN PREGNANCY AND POSTPARTUM. IT LOOKS A LOT LIKE ANXIETY.” TONYA FULWIDER, CO-FOUNDER, POEM: “MOMS ARE JUST SO CAUGHT UP IN WORRY, SOMETIMES THEY HAVE SCARY THOUGHTS, THEY CAN’T QUITE GET RID OF ALL THE ‘WHAT IFS…” TONYA FULWIDER, CO-FOUNDER, POEM: “ADDRESSING THAT APPROPRIATELY IS SO IMPORTANT.” THAT’S WHY TONYA AND A GROUP OF WOMEN FOUNDED THE POEM PROGRAM — OR PRENATAL OUTREACH AND ENCOURAGEMENT FOR MOMS — TO GET MOTHERS ACCESS TO THE CARE AND SUPPORT THEY NEED. TONYA FULWIDER, CO-FOUNDER, POEM: “IT’S SUCH AN IMPORTANT TIME PERIOD. STARTING A NEW FAMILY IS LIKE… NOT LIKE ANYTHING ELSE IN A WOMAN’S LIFE.” TONYA FULWIDER, CO-FOUNDER, POEM: “YOU KNOW, EVERYBODY ASKS TO HOLD THE BABY. WHO’S HOLDING THE MOTHER?” THE PROGRAM CONNECTS MOMS TO MENTORS… HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS… EVEN TRANSPORTATION — AND PUTS POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY IN THE SPOTLIGHT WITH EVENTS LIKE “GIVE MOM THE MIC.” TONYA FULWIDER, CO-FOUNDER, POEM: “THIS EVENT IS A GOOD WAY TO START THE CONVERSATION, AND CONTINUE THE CONVERSATION, TO SAY, ‘LET’S GET REAL. LET’S TALK ABOUT HOW HARD IT IS.'” TONYA FULWIDER, CO-FOUNDER, POEM: “THERE’S THIS MISNOMER THAT, IF YOU SAY, I’M DEALING WITH A MENTAL ILLNESS, SOMEHOW I’M NOT AS GOOD OF A MOM AS SOMEBODY WHO DOESN’T HAVE THAT STRUGGLE. AND I SAY, GOOD MOMS, GREAT MOMS, WONDERFUL MOMS… ALSO DEAL WITH MENTAL ILLNESSES.” JENNIFER AND ON MONDAY — POEM LAUNCHED ITS NEW PROGRAM “2-B- NURTURED” — WHICH WILL PROVIDE PEER SUPPORT BY AND FOR WOMEN OF COLOR — WHO ARE BATTLING POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION.
