Communication & Understanding Others : Ways to Help a Depressed Spouse

Hi, my name is Reka Morvay, I’m a psychologist
and I’m going to talk to you today about what to do if your spouse is depressed. Depression
is a very serious illness. Some of the symptoms of depression may include lack of motivation,
a lack of interest that, a lack of interest in activities that used to be enjoyable, constant
fatigue, changes in sleeping pattern, so somebody who is either unable to sleep as much as they
would like or somebody who is sleeping more than they would like. All of these symptoms
if they occur more than two weeks in a row then they satisfy the criteria for clinical
depression. Now what you can do as a spouse to help your loved one cope with depression
is first of all, become educated about depression yourself. Keep an active and healthy lifestyle
so that you don’t slide into depression, try to assist your partner in finding help, try
to make your life together as healthy and as enjoyable as possible. Keep eating nutritiously,
remain active, do physical activity, try to help find, try to help your spouse find activities
that they would enjoy to help lift them out of depression. But most of all help your spouse
find professional help so that they can deal with their depression.
