I DON’T KNOW.>>WHAT ABOUT THE RUMORS THAT THE RETIREMENT IS MAYBE TEMPORARY?>>SOMEBODY ACTUALLY JOKED WITH ME THE OTHER DAY. I SAID SOMETHING THE OTHER DAY, AND THEY WERE LIKE,BACK? I SAID, I PROBABLY COULD BUT THERE’S NOTHING ELSE TO DO.>>YOU HAD YOUR SPIKE THE BALL IN THE END ZONE MOMENT.>>I HAD RACES THAT STILL GAVE ME THE ITCH TO COME BACK AFTER REQUEST ’12. NOW WITH MY WIFE EXPECTING NUMBER TWO –>>BABY NUMBER TWO. BOMBER OR BOOMERETTE IS ON THEIR WAY.>>SO, YEAH, I GOT NOTHING ELSE LEFT IN THE POOL. THERE ARE A LOT OF THINGS THAT WE WANT TO DO, AND WE ARE DOING OUTSIDE OF THE POOL, THAT WE’RE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT. WE’RE ENJOIGENJOYING IT.>>ONE OF THE THINGS IS MICHAEL IS IN A NEW DOCUMENTARY CALLED “ANGST.” HE OPENS UP ABOUT HIS OWN STRUGGLES WITH ANGST, WITH DEPRESSION AND HIS VERY LOW MOMENTS, EVEN AFTER WINNING OLYMPIC GOLD. WE’LL TALK ABOUT THAT RIGHT AFTER THE BREAK WITH MORE MICHAEL PHELPS. I just finished months of chemo. But I don’t want to talk about months. I want to talk about years. Treatments have gotten better, so… I’m hoping for good years ahead. That’s thanks to research funded by the American Cancer Society. The same folks giving me free rides to treatments, insurance advice, and a place to stay during chemo. I need that stuff like you don’t know. And now that you do, please give at cancer.org. Go Pro with Crest Pro Health Crest Pro-Health… …really brought my mouth…>>>WE ARE BACK NOW WITH OLYMPIAN MICHAEL PHELPS. OLYMPIAN AND AMERICAN HERO. I THINK IT IS AWESOME THAT YOU ARE WILLING TO SHARE A MORE PERSONAL SIDE OF YOURSELF THAT IS NOT EXACTLY THE SAME AS THIS WINNING CHAMPION YOU SEE IN THE POOL. IT IS A MUCH MORE VULNERABLE SIDE OF YOU. YOU’RE COMING OUT AND SPEAKING OPENLY ABOUT YOUR BATTLES WITH DEPRESSION AND AANXIETY. HOW BAD HAS THAT BEEN FOR YOU?>>I MEAN, I GUESS IT REALLY STARTED WHEN I CAME OUT AND TALKED ABOUT THIS IN, I GUESS, THE LEAD UP TO RIO. I DID A PIECE ON THE COVER OF “SI.” I DON’T KNOW WHY I OPENED UP TO TALK ABOUT IT, BUT I GUESS I WAS JUST SICK AND TIRED OF JUST HAVING IT INSIDE OF ME FOR 20 PLUS YEARS. I WAS READY TO MAKE A CHANGE. YOU KNOW, FOR ME FOR SO LONG, I DIDN’T HAVE SELF-LOVE. I HAD NO SELF-CONFIDENCE. I DIDN’T LIKE WHO I SAW IN THE MIRROR. SO I JUST GOT KIND OF SICK OF IT. OBVIOUSLY, I HIT A VERY LOW POINT IN MY LIFE, WHERE I DIDN’T WANT TO BE ALIVE ANYMORE. I DECIDED I WAS GO I THIING TO MAKE A CHANGE.>>THIS IS AFTER YOU BECAME AN OLYMPIC CHAMPION.>>AFTER FOUR OLYMPICS. THIS IS AFTER A COUPLE MEDALS.>>SO THERE MAY BE A LOT OF PEOPLE OUT THERE WONDERING, HOW CAN THAT BE? YOU WERE SO SUCCESSFUL.>>I MEAN, IT’S — WE ALL GO THROUGH THINGS. WE ALL GO THROUGH THISTRUGGLES, RIGHT? EVERYBODY IN THIS ROOM GO THROUGH STRUGGLES IN THE SAME WAY. THAT’S WHAT WE HAVE TO REALIZE. YES, I’VE BEEN SUCCESSFUL IN WHAT I’VE DONE, BUT IT DOESN’T MAKE ME SUPER HUMAN. FOR ME, I WAS VERY GOAL ORIENT AND HAD PASSIONATE ABOUT WHAT I WAS DOING AND WANTED TO BE THE BEST. FOR ME, I WAS ABLE TO DO THAT. BUT I MEAN, I PUT MY PANTS ON JUST LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE DOES. YOU KNOW, LIKE IT’S JUST SOMETHING THAT EVERY SINGLE PERSON GOES THROUGH. FOR ME, I WAS SICK AND TIRED OF COMPARTMENTALIZING THINGS THAT I DIDN’T WANT TO TALK ABOUT. I JUST OPENED UP. HONESTLY, SINCE THEN, MY LIFE HAS BECOME EASIER. I ALWAYS MAKE THE JOKE, I WAS LIKE, YEAH, I LEARNED TO COMMUNICATE AT 30. GREAT.>>HE’S 32 NOW.>>BETTER LATE THAN NEVER, RIGHT?>>WHAT HAS THE RESPONSE BEEN? YOU ARE A HERO TO MANY AMERICANS BUT ESPECIALLY YOUNG KIDS. HAVE ANY OF THEM SPOKEN TO YOU ABOUT THAT?>>YOU KNOW, IT’S — SOMEBODY I TRAIN WITH AND WHO LIVES WITH US, ALISON SCHMIDT, HAS DEALT WITH DEPRESSION, AS WELL, AND HAS OPENED UP AND TALKED ABOUT IT. I THINK IT’S SOMETHING THAT WE BOTH SHARE WHEN SOMEBODY COMES UP AND THANKS US FOR TALKING ABOUT IT. SHOWING THAT IT IS OKAY TO NOT BE OKAY. I THINK WE PROBABLY, HOPEFULLY, HAVE SAVED SOME LIVES, AND HOPEFULLY WE CAN SAVE MORE. WHEN WE DID THE — OR WHEN I DID THE DOCUMENTARY, “ANGST,” AND SAT WITH CHARLIE, SITTING THERE TALKING TO HIM, I MEAN, IT’S LIKE THE KID IS 10 OR 11 YEARS OLD. TO HEAR, YOU KNOW, WHAT HE THOUGHT ABOUT NOT WANTING TO BE ALIVE ANYMORE, IT’S SAD. FOR ME, I’M ABLE NOW TO REALIZE MY EMOTIONS AND TALK ABOUT MY EMOTIONS. I THINK THAT’S SOMETHING THAT EVERYBODY SHOULD DO, NOT JUST KIDS BUT EVERYBODY. WHY AM I ANGRY? WHY AM I UPSET? UNDERSTANDING.>>WE HAVE A CLIP FROM THE DOCUMENTARY, “ANGST,” WHICH FEATURES MICHAEL. LET’S TAKE A LOOK.>>I FOUND AND SAW THE PEOPLE WHO CARED ABOUT ME THE MOST COMING IN TO HELP. OR WANTING TO COME TO THE HOUSE OR TO THE ROOM TO BRING FOOD OR SUPPORT, WHATEVER IT MIGHT BE, OR TO TALK. AND I THINK THAT’S WHERE I REALLY NOTICED THAT IT WAS TIME FOR ME TO FIGURE OUT WHAT WAS GOING ON AND ASK FOR HELP.>>YOU PAID IT FORWARD, TOO. I KNOW THERE IS AN AUSTRALIAN SWIMMER, A FAMOUS GUY, ONE OF YOUR CLOSEST FRIENDS. YOU’VE HELPED HIM OUT OF HIS DEPENDENCY, A HALFWAY HOUSE OF SORTS, YOUR HOME, AND YOU SPOKE TO TIGER WOODS AFTER HIS PUBLIC ISSUES.>>THE BIGGEST THING IS BEING ABLE TO OPEN UP. LIKE I SAID, JUST UNDERSTAND THAT IT IS OKAY TO NOT BE OKAY. NONE OF US ARE PERFECT IN THIS WORLD. NONE OF US ARE.>>NOT EVEN MICHAEL PHELPS.>>NO. HELL NO. BUT JUST THE LITTLE THINS I’VE BE — THINGS I’VE BEEN ABLE TO LEARN. AND JUST TO TALK TO PEOPLE, YOU FEEL BETTER. FOR ME, I KNOW HOW IMPORTANT MENTAL HEALTH IS IN MY LIFE. I’M FINALLY NOW ABLE TO REALIZE THAT WORKING OUT IS SOMETHING THAT MAKES ME A BETTER HUSBAND, A BETTER FRIEND, A BETTER FATHER. IT’S JUST LITTLE THINGS LIKE THAT THAT I’VE BEEN ABLE TO LEARN THROUGH THIS WHOLE PROCESS, TO MAKE ME BETTER. MAKE ME STRONGER. AND IT IS, YOU KNOW, JUST BEING ABLE TO HELP PEOPLE. LIKE THAT’S ALL I WANT TO DO.>>I KNOW THE WATER IS CATHARTIC FOR YOU, BEING IN THERE. HE PROBABLY CAN’T GET IN THE POOL WITHOUT BEING COMPETITIVE. DO YOU EVER HAVE FRIENDLY SWIMS?>>WE DO BUT IT ALWAYS HAS TO END WITH US DIVE AT 50 AGAINST EACH OTHER. IT’S OUR COMPETITIVE SIDE.>>NOW YOU’RE ACTUALLY WORKING WITH COALGATE TO PROMOTE WATER CONSERVATION, WHICH IS PERFECT FOR YOU. INSTEAD OF PLUNGING INTO THE WATER AND SWIMMING AS FAST AS WE CAN, YOU’RE TELLING US TO TURN OFF THE WATER WHEN WE BRUSH OUR TEETH.>>LEAVE THE WATER RUNNING FOR TWO MINUTES, YOU CAN WASTE UP TO EIGHT GALLONS A DAY. ONE PERSON. THINK HOW MUCH PEOPANY PEOPLE ARE IN THE U.S. IT HAS TO CHANGE. FOR ME NOW, WE’RE BECOMING A FAMILY OF FOUR, SO WE HAVE DISHES, LAUNDRY, TOILETS FLUSHING, WATERING THE YARD, BRUSHING OUR TEETH, TAKING A SHOWER.>>WATER BALLOONS. YOU’LL FIND THAT OUT SOON.>>SO A FAMILY OF FOUR CAN WASTE UP TO 400 GALLONS A DAY. A DAY.>>WOW.>>AND THERE ARE PEOPLE THAT DON’T HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE CLEAN DRINKING WATER. SO IT IS SOMETHING I THINK WE CAN ALL WORK TOGETHER ON. REALLY SINCE WE LAUNCHED THE CAMPAIGN, I’VE HAD PEOPLE STOP ME, WHETHER AT AN AIRPORT OR ON THE STREET AND SAY, EVERY TIME I BRUSH MY TEETH, I THINK OF YOU. I GUESS THAT’S GOOD.>>BETTER THAN THE TOILET THING. IT COULD HAVE GONE A DIFFERENT WAY.>>THAT’S RIGHT.>>MICHAEL, THANK YOU SO MUCH.>>THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME.>>THANK YOU FOR MAKING US FEEL THE WAY YOU DO AND BEING OPEN A AND HONEST. YOU CAN LEARN MORE ABOUT MICHAEL’S WATER CONSERVATION WORK AT TODAY.COM/MEGYNTODAY.>>>COMING UP, WE’RE TALKING GRIT. DO YOU HAVE IT? AN UNCONVENTIONAL MODEL WHO This time it’s his turn.

  1. Even the most successful people are still human beings like everyone else. They experienced what many of us went through, but he rose above all his adversity.

  2. He has such a big platform to preach about issues. I think there is much greater issues than water wastage!

  3. BETWEEN THE TWO

    Paranoia or intuition?
Oh what a shame the plans do not come into fruition
She stood in the darkness gazing into the mirror
Except the mirror was darkness for not knowing was her fear
In the darkness she was predicated
    On the fear she medicated
    And dedicated her essence
Waiting for the light to reveal its presence

  4. As someone who suffers from social anxiety GAD,and depression it helps when famous people talks about themselves suffering as well…but it makes me feel bad on the other hand.. cause I don't have a talent , I don't have something I'm.good at…and i would neverrr be able to be like a "noraml" person…its hard wayyy too.hard…he said he felt ugly but im my case im ugly …

  5. I would watch this if it was anyone else doing the interview I truly do not like Megyn Kelly something about her come off non-sympathetic and I would rather tune out her voice. I find her demeanour on television to be untrustworthy.

  6. Love how real, humble, and free he is now. Wonderful to see him mature into a family man. ☺️🙏

  7. That's true. Hundreds of millions of people don't have clean water to use in their everyday lives. But most of them are in Africa and Asia. If we save enough fresh water in the U.S., how can we move it to those areas?

  8. You know what wastes MUCH more water Michael? All the animal foods you eat/burgers etc!
    Animal agriculture! http://www.cowspiracy.com/facts/
    (((((LET'S GET REAL!!))))) o.O

  9. I get what he's saying. But some countries governments are so corrupt that poverty prevents them from having clean drinking water.

  10. Anxiety almost destroyed my life until I accepted the latent issues from my childhood that were holding me back from greatness. Thank you Michael. Bless you and yours man.

  11. most Americans are wasteful. recycling is very important. try to limit your waste. become more self conscious of all the excess we do not need to live a good life.

  12. why set up a show like this? The audience shouldn't be right in front of the subject and surrounding them. Audience should be more of a background thing that the viewer shouldn't see much of. Also bad interviewer

  13. see , even if u r 4 time olympian, u ll hav to face troubles.. everything is in our brain!! keep it calm, think less n be a good human to others

  14. So mike mike I hear ya about stress I got some stress issues. To from army duty special forces well if you ever come back to silver bow country just wondering if your good with cuddle down time let me know known as little boy silver bow

  15. the only thing bad about talk-space is they don't take insurance if I did talk space then I wouldn't be able to pay my utility bills

  16. It's great that he opened about anxiety . In India it is very tabo type of disease people don't want to see the doctor fearing the response from society. People will just think that u r mad if u go & see a therapist or counselor.

  17. i have heightened anxiety but have realized that you can use your anxiety to do want you want in life and channel this energy to create something beautiful. it's tough, agonizing and frustrating and can really affect your life but it's all in the mind. once you learn the concept of "acceptance" of its physical manifestations and not "getting involved" with your mind in relation to anxiety and depression then you are "definitely" on your way to recovery. fear and worry are and "little traumas" accumulated in life are just one of many causes of anxiety which may lead or not to depression or vice versa. kudos and thanks a lot to Mike Phelps for sharing to all. it's a ton of help for others going through when you see somebody famous who shares their experience on this mental health issue in public. overcoming the discomfort and unpleasant feelings of anxiety is using the willpower and awareness and that's what his mindset is when he is in the pool. good Youtube bloggers IMO are Wonderbro but there're a lot there who are great in giving and sharing their recovery path.

  18. He has immense success; he has comforts of life, he is respected; he is adored by people; he has family and kids; It's of course much easier to be ok not be ok; general population who has depression may have it 100x harder.

  19. I exactly hate Megan jelly. Just hate her attitude. The way she behaves and speaks with important persons like Putin , Modi , Phelp etc even if she tries so much to look humble and polite.

  20. Fame, Success, Wealth and Accolades will never fill the emptiness God created in every individual. Michael, it is Jesus that will complete your life. Believe the word of God.

  21. Woe is me – not enough space on my neck for another gold medal.

Get some real people problems then cry about it.

  22. Yes. Michael described me! I finally know that i am not wandering alone .my anxiety..depression..my no communication…thanks

  23. It's great that people can talk about it, don't get me wrong.

But if people ever say: "if they can do it, you can, too", I'll seriously lose my cool.

Not that I don't want him to tell his story. That is not what I'm saying.

    Anyone?!

  24. This chair must be very uncomfortable for michael. See he put his hands under his leg, i can tell he has back pain doing cross leg. Why not just sit on couch or sofa?

  25. I think Michael is a Legend's name.
Michael Phelps, Michael Jordan, Michael Jackson, Michael Jai White. WTH?

  26. Thank you for sharing. Will help so one, just knowing that the great champion have human moments.

  27. I think Jesus Christ is a legend focus on him people repent of your sins and except Jesus Christ as your savior today

  28. Why don't you invite our very own Manny Pacquiao, the only 8 Division Boxing champion. Face to face with Michael Phelps, it would be a very fruitful conversation to watch.
